It is my humble opinion...
If you are training for self defense and you spend more time practicing forms than sparring… you are not training for self defense.

Why The Issue of Gay Marriage is Important
This week marks the beginning of various hearings being carried out by the U.S. Supreme Court in regards to same sex marriage. Regardless of what your opinion is on the matter, we can all agree this issue is not going to go away. This is a trend of all issues of social injustice, as they gain momentum and publicity it only becomes a matter of time.
I am not going to go into a long rant about...

Hello Friend,
Right now, you are reading this and there are quite a few things going on in your head. Some of these things are good, while others might be bad. Some of them make you happy, while others might make you sad. You may even feel an insecurity or two. Even though we have never met face to face, I want you to know something.
Despite all of the things in your mind that are trying to pull you down,...

It's called Jiu Jitsu
If you train in jiu jitsu, chances are you have had a conversation go a little like this:
Individual: How is your karate or kung fu thing going? You: It’s going fine, and it’s called jiu jitsu. Individual: Yeah, whatever.
I want to explain why this is disrespectful to the practitioner. It isn’t so much that the person inquiring doesn’t preemptively know the difference. I...

Samantha Faulhaber: Petty Advice →
bjjsam:
I’ve noticed most of the BJJ blogs I’ve seen on tumblr seem to be white or blue belts. That’s great. Write down your experiences and look back at them later. It will probably amuse you.
Just so you know, you didn’t just “learn” a new choke series that is going to change your game. Do you remember…
A good post and I would like to weigh in on the discussion. Down...

It always cuts into the times that deep down I know I’d rather be spending with friends or doing clubs at my college. Also, I need to get a job and I only have jiu-jitsu on days that I don’t have school, so it eats up the time I could be working and makes my schedule look very choppy on…
This is a tough one for me, but I would like to give some insight on the subject. It...

Ode to the Champion
We all need that motivation, that little voice in your head that will push you when nothing else does. This is my voice in my head that i’d like to share with you.
“So, here you are. Despite the doubts in your mind, the hardest part has come and gone. The choice. The choice to be here. The courage to put it on the line is the greatest victory that no one can take away from you.
You...

Build a Network
I think it is important when you are a part of the martial arts community that you build a strong network. I mean this in two ways. First, a network of friends and training partners that are there for you. They can provide you moral and technical support throughout your life. By the same token, you are also be there for them. Second, a network of instructors and coaches of various disciplines. For...

Maybe I am Just Naive...
When I was growing up I was raised on some very basic principles. Treat others as you would like to be treated and keep your hands to yourself. These same principles are taught in almost every single kindergarten classroom in the country. Maybe I am just naive to think that everyone will follow these ideas. That would explain why I am surprised when someone acts against them.
I am not a saint in...

Dragon Noodles!
A blog I follow posted a link to another blog called Budget Bytes, a blog dedicated to cost effective meals. I came across a recipe for “Dragon Noodles” and it was amazing! I love spicy food and I can’t wait to use a similar sauce for my chicken stir fry. I recommend giving it a try.

A Story About Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton, England. His B-17 was called ‘Ye Old Pub’ and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton.
After flying the B-17 over an enemy airfield, a German pilot named Franz...
