For my first few years of training I had a quasi-elitist view of gi training over no-gi. I held the misguided opinion that gi was technique while no-gi focused on personal athleticism and explosive actions. It would be fair to say that explosive moments can be negated by grips in gi training, however, to simply dismiss no-gi training was a huge mistake. I have learned this over the past few weeks of training.
A glaring hole in my game was brought to my attention, a crutch was revealed only because of my cross training. If I had continued to hold that elitist view I would continue to train and rely on poor habits that were holding me back.
Do not be afraid to cross train, I believe it can only help it. It certainly helped me.
