Why The Issue of Gay Marriage is Important

This week marks the beginning of various hearings being carried out by the U.S. Supreme Court in regards to same sex marriage. Regardless of what your opinion is on the matter, we can all agree this issue is not going to go away. This is a trend of all issues of social injustice, as they gain momentum and publicity it only becomes a matter of time.

I am not going to go into a long rant about where I fall but I think we need to address why this is important. From my perspective, as a white, straight, male, I do not see a problem with gay marriage. Why? It has absolutely nothing to do with me and it brings other people joy and love.

I suppose my biggest problem with those who advocate against gay marriage is that they lack simply empathy about how their actions and words impact others around them. I could not imagine being attracted and, ultimately, in love with someone and then told “no”.

Let us not forget, this country was founded and prided on the fact that this is the “land of the free… so long as you aren’t a woman, a homosexual, a transgender, or another other social/ethnic minority.” This is why this issue is so important and spans far beyond it’s own confines. It is more than two men or two woman wanting to get married, it is about justice and social equality.

The world seems to be moving forward, and yet, American conservatives continue to try to keep things as they were in the “good ol’ days.” Things change and it is about time for this nation to take a big step forward, swallow it’s pride, and say “I’m sorry.”

I’m sorry I judged you.

I’m sorry my biases generated unwarranted hate.
